This is one of those recipes that needs to sit for 12 hours to remove the dryness from the oven cooking. ... then it really gets good.
I didn't have pecans handy, so I substituted walnuts. Wasn't happy with them until after the pudding actually moistened up a bit. Now they're just OK. I think the pecans would be a much better choice, as you indicate.
