I Gotta Vent Here

  • wynnebaer 15 years ago
I ran across a post today and the poster gave the site credit for the recipe but recited verbatim the other sites description of the recipe and even posted the same pic....Am I wrong in being a bit perturbed by this?....There are recipes I've posted that I've gotten from other sites but to just copy and paste.....that just rubs me the wrong way....Okay, I'm done..

I thought that this site was supposed to be for our own recipec, recipes wev'e tried , a place where we can give our own touch to known classics and suggestions but not just to copy whar we have read somewhere else

Well...I have lots of recipes that I found online that I have posted. Some I have tweaked and made my own, and some I like just the way they were written. When I find a recipe online that I like, I copy and paste into Word. Since I found this site, I haven't looked at many other sites, so, most of my recipes from online I have had for quite a while. When I want to post one of those, I copy and paste from my Word document, because that's the easiest way. I don't have a lot of computer time for fun, so, that's easiest for me. I probably have a few that are verbatim from how I copied them. That is not meant to be tacky or to misrepresent myself. Most of mine I did not note the site, since I was copying and pasting the recipe for cooking purposes. But, I do say in my posts that I found it online. So, it's very possible that there are others here that do like I do, and just copy and paste what they have instead of typing, with no hidden agenda or reasoning. I have made every recipe I have posted, so, I am not just copying and pasting from one site to another. But, since there are some of us who don't visit other sites much, I personally appreciate someone sharing those recipes with us, as long as they are giving credit. Maybe they think that since they are posting someone else's recipe, it's more honest to use their exact wording?

Sparow makes some very good points. I have a large collection of cookbooks but also search out a lot of stuff online. I share what I feel is good enough and the rest is detritus. I know for a fact that there are people in GR that post prodigiously just to get a higher group ranking. If that's what turns their crank, so be it. Some people have little else of value in their realms of existence, so if they get a thrill out of being number 10 at GR instead of being a lower number, I'm not going to let it bother me. Water off a duck's back, as far as I'm concerned.

I admit that lately I have posted a lot of recipes that I have found on line... sometimes I will use their word to describe it but usually with my own also.... as many of you know I have celiac disease and can't have wheat, rye or barley.... that doesn't mean that I didn't eat wheat before.... so if I see a recipe that I think I can try to convert to my flours I will post it for my own future testing...

second: I have been posting recipes that look or sound great for others that I know are either looking for that type of recipe or who like certain foods...

i don't normally have time to check out other recipe sites so this is a whole new and fun experience for me...
but the main reason that I am doing it is because I am looking for a certain recipe... I haven't found it yet so until I do i will be out looking and posting fun recipes that I find...

on a different note... each of us use this site for different reasons... I have boxes of recipes that I have collected over more years than I will admit... I forgotten most of them, or when I want one I cant find it.... I find the Christmas ones in the summer, the ones for fresh garden veggies in the middle of the winter... I would love to have them all in the same format in notebooks so I can find them when I want them...

also I have tons of cookbooks but I don't own every cookbook... I also can't afford to buy every magazine that has recipes in.... so if someone shares a recipe from one of these resources I am grateful... it is something I don't have... I may not like the recipe but I am still grateful....

I do agree that credit should be given for not only the recipe but the photo as well... I feel betrayed if that is not done and I see the recipe someplace else.... I know that sounds silly ..it's the same recipe with or without the credit.!!

Everyone here makes very good points....But I think I may have made the issue I had with what I saw unclear....I too, post recipes from cookbooks, magazines, other web sites and whatever source I can get them from....I do not insinuate someone elses thoughts of the recipe as my own, nor do I use someone elses photo without giving credit for it.......That is what upset me. Not that it was from somewhere else, but that it was misleading to whoever read it. Hope I've explained myself to everyones satisfaction....Happy Cooking...:)

I saw a post a couple of weeks ago that really bothered me. It was a recipe from a copyrighted blog that I visit nearly every day. The recipe had been copied and pasted and the picture taken from the site as well and posted here. The poster had the nerve to change the name of the recipe and did not give credit to the site at all. I felt like pm'ing them but decided not to. That's like stealing to me.

I guess I am in total agreement about the dishonesty of posting recipes and photos from any source and not giving proper credit.......it's stealing, plain and simple. I make every effort to give credit where credit is due.

Just have to shake my head when I run across a recipe from a mag or book I have and when I check it out it's on GR verbatim with the photo, but with no acknowledgment as to where they've gotten it.

A lot of people aren't doing searches before posting lately either.........I saw a recipe for Chicken Pomodoro and checked it out........same one I posted 11 months ago with another exactly like it ..........I may post a recipe with the same name, but I make sure the ingredients are different.........but, that's never going to change I guess.......but it's kinda a dumb waste of time, posting something that's already there.

I confess I do the copy and paste thing because I like the recipe, and want to make it. I lose everything so I put it here where I will find it. I do give credit to the site I got it from. I never claim they are mine... Sorry if I upset you with this.

Tuilelaith, I do the same thing. If it's one I really like and don't want to lose it, I post it here because I know I can always come here to get it again. (I've had my hard drive crash more than once and lost everything, including recipes) Always give credit where credit is due. There have been many times when I needed a recipe when I was away from home, and just quickly looked it up on my page right from my phone. So handy. Sorry if it offends anyone.
