Ingredients
  • Large Package Ground Round or Sirloin or Beef (3-5 pounds)
  • ! pound hot and/ or sweet sausage--take out of casing (Can also use ground turkey or chicken)
  • 6-8 cloves garlic
  • 1 cup Italian bread crumbs
  • 1 1/2 cup grated Romano cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • Handful chopped fresh or dried sweet basil
  • 1-2 tablespoon crushed red pepper (add more according to preference)
  • 1/2 cup half and half or milk
  • These amounts are estimates and can be varied.

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Have baking pans ready to go, I use the disposable ones for easy clean up
  3. In a large bowl add meat.
  4. Make a well in the middle of the meat mixture
  5. Put eggs in the middle of the well
  6. Chop garlic finely, put in the well
  7. Add the rest of the ingredients.
  8. Mix by hand . Try not to over mix
  9. Roll into golf ball size balls. If you have teenagers boys roll into softball size balls
  10. Bake for 30 minutes.
  11. Add the meatballs to your spaghetti sauce and let simmer for 2-3 hours in the sauce to have the flavors blend. The longer they cook, the more tender they are. Some of the flavoring in the bottom of the baking pan can be added to help flavor your sauce.
  12. Let extra meatballs cool, and freeze in zip lock bag.

Hats off to Grandma... these are so much like my Aunts... they must be related! Great... !!!

I love this recipe.... sounds wonderful......

Oh, yes, yes, YESSSS! i can taste them - remembering the 'little old italian lady' in an italian delicatessen on long island who served these to customers. just two 'stand-up-tables'- but what a joy it was. and she gave me her recipe which got lost on one of my many moves. THIS IS JUST LIKE IT. i could hug you out of joy! thank you so much! i shall tell my son - and make these - he still talks about the greatest meatballs of all times! the only problem is getting the hot and sweet sausage - have not yet found a place here which stocks them - but i will try!

These are excellent and a real keeper. I love baking off a double batch and freezing them to have on hand a all times. Wonderful - thank you! =)

Thank you for the kind words. These do conjure long lost memories of our 'little Italian grandmas". Mine was an angel (tough as nails), but an angel.
Yes, but, boy could she cook, sure miss her...hope they turn out well.

I love meatballs! I've always fried them- baking would be so much less messy and fatty- I'll have to try it. I have a recipe somewhere for these delicious lamb meatballs (with a bit of Moroccan flavour-)- I'll have to dig it up and post...
Thanks for this- I'll let you know how I go!

OK, making these tonight for friends- excited! I'll let you know how I go!

I made these tonight- I'm staying with friends and wanted to treat the family- adults and kids both loved them- they were so delicious and easy to make. This is definitely staying in my repertoire! Thanks so much!

Oh my..i've been looking for a good recipe for "real" meatballs..so many things say to buy the frozen ones....i can't wait...thanks.....
