How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 450°
  • Mix all ingredients except milk very well.
  • Start adding milk a little at a time to mix well.
  • Continue adding milk and stirring until mixture is a consistency of a thick soup.If you get it too thin add a little more flour.
  • I always bake in an iron skillet sprayed with cooking spray and after I spray it I put it in the hot oven for about 1 minute and my corn bread never sticks to the skillet (I posted a pic of the corn bread while it is in the skillet and after it is turned out onto a plate).
  • Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Comes out a little dry and crunchy especially around the edges. Cornbread flavor is there without any sweet.
This is earmarked to be eaten in buttermilk.

I'm going to give this a try and and I'll let you know if it is like my mamma's cornbread. I forgot that she used buttermilk too! Mmmmm I can't wait to try it. I could eat the whole thing myself. :)

    Some questions:
About how much milk ends up being used? Just a ballpark figure would be great.
What milk substitute would work best: soy milk, rice milk or almond breeze. If any would you recommend I use vanilla or plain (probably vanilla since it's sweeter).

Will try your recipe for cornbread, don't have a real good one myself, if I like it my husband doesn't and visa versa, but this sounds and looks like we both will agree on this one. Great Post.

My mom makes cornbread very similar to this. It's such a great recipe, takes me back to Mississippi days.

I'm also originally from Mississippi. I don't measure either lol. I also heat my greased iron skillet till it is very hot and sprinkle a small amount of cornmeal on the bottom. I like using bacon grease like the other user.

My dad would make cornbread and put syrup over it for breakfast. Every now and again I make it like that for my kids.
