I made this cake for a "red" themed party. Instead of liquid food coloring, I used 2 teaspoons of Wilton's "Christmas Red" gel paste plus enough water to make a paste with the cocoa. It turned out a rich gorgeous red! The best part of this recipe, in my opinion, is the icing. It is flavourful, sweet without being sickeningly sweet, and has a beautiful consistency for decorating. Bravo! I used puffy heart stickers and a red heart necklace to decorate the cake and it looked amazing. Thank you.

OH MY GOSH!!! You don't have to twist my arm. You're absolutely and positively correct - this cake would be perfect for our birthdays! Thank you so much for sharing it with all of us! Do you really think I can wait until November? Well, the answer to that is a big NO. I'll bake it way in advance and celebrate everyone's birthday with it ;) This is a "5" "5" "5" all the way!

Yes, this is the original! I found a picture of this cake in one of my grandma’s magazines when I was a kid. I asked my mom to make it for me and it became my special request birthday cake every year after that. A couple years ago one of our friends, who was taking baking and pastry classes, said she would make a cake for my birthday party. I asked for the Red Velvet cake. She found the recipe and made it and it was wonderful. Because it’s my favorite, I added it to the Birthday Club group.

This sounds decadent! I've never heard of putting flour in frosting before, and this has me really curious now. Can't wait to try this out.

Yeeesss!! The frosting on this cake is often referred to as "Mary Kay" frosting, and it's hard to find these days. When people place an order for a RV cake, I always make sure to ask them which icing they'd like---(because I prefer this frosting to the cream cheese) The recipe you have is similar to mine, I think there have been 100's of "variations" over the years, lol. I'm so glad to see this original version! Thanks!
