Ingredients

How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 375 F
  • In a medium sized sauce pan melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, salt and pepper and saute. Remove from heat and whisk in the flour until a smooth paste is formed. Then add milk and continue to cook until the mixture is thick and bubbling gently.
  • In a greased (use shortening or lard) oven dish layer half the potatoes, with half of the onion rings and top with half of the sauce mixture. Layer the rest of the potatoes and onions and add the rest of the sauce.
  • Bake at 375F covered for 45 minutes, then remove cover and continue baking for another 30 minutes.
  • Note: It seems like a lot of onion but it really works with this dish. I usually sprinkle some parsley on top just to add colour.

HI,( from Puert0 Rico) and always thought that scalloped potatoes had to be charged on cheese. till i'm noticing right now it has none!!lll I'm making this right now...but i'll put some cheese in top of these ...I love cheese, but not in an exgerate way. (The potatoes are in the oven right now in my kitchen at 11:00 p.m. here)...i cant wait!!!..i'm having "watery" mouth right now!!

Great recipe. Looked like an awful lot of potatoes for the onion/milk sauce but it turned out just fine. The potatoes were cooked through, which is the important thing.

I had some heavy cream that needed to be used up so I mixed it with some milk. Also had a block of extra sharp cheese that I had to keep scraping the mold off before using, so I shredded it up and topped the dish adding 5 more minutes for the cheese to melt. Also doubled the seasoning.

Do you have any idea how long it took me to find this recipe???! I've been looking for one like this that didn't rely on a creamed soup to do the job for them, I'm so happy to have found this one. As far as I'm concerned this is the ONLY way to make true scalloped potatoes, thanks for sharing it!!!
