Ingredients

How to make it

  • Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the dried beef and sauté until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low; add the flour and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring often to combine with the oil.
  • Gradually whisk in the milk; cook until thickened, about another 5 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle with pepper. Serve over toast slices topped with cheese, or with biscuits

I grew up on it, and I couldn't begin to count how many times I fixed it for my daughters while they were growing up. As a single parent, it sure made a cheap meal. However, I always used those packages of Budding beef, and cut them into little pieces. Maybe I should share that recipe? - Linda

I make this often. To put a twist on it I brown hamburger with some onion and garlic then make the gravey. a hardy breakfast or light meal.

How did I miss this one??? My dad also made this when I was growing up. What memories. My siblings might say a bad one, but not me. Dad started cooking this when my mom started working as a dispatcher for the city police dept. & even though Dad did cook some, this would be his "go to" recipe. So maybe he "went to" it too often. Still it's a great stick to your ribs recipe. Now I make it for my daughter and she loves it too. Thanks for the smiles linebb956...:)

That looks good. It is similar to what I have made. I also rinse the dried beef, let it sit in some water while I make the white sauce. I add the beef to it.

My mom used to fix this. I could never figure out why people didn't care for this. I thought it was good. It still is. Thanks for the good recipe.

Oh heavens, what a memory maker this dish is! My dad adored it, my mom hated it and it was always a guilty pleasure to make it for daddy when mom was working late. Best on biscuits, but we've been known to down it over grits. Daddy's also loved milk toast! Anyone out there remember that poor man's breakfast? Daddy swore it was the best hangover cure ever!!!

I ate this stuff in Korea freezing my butt off while in the Army. It was powdered eggs and powdered milk and this. Do you know what SOS stands for? S.... on Shingle. Of the three this was the only edible thing. I do have a creamed tuna on toast recipe that I often do for breakfast. If your husband likes SOS, he'll love this. I'll post it for you soon. Thanks for the memories.
