Egg Rolls-my Way-ci Recipe

Egg Rolls-my Way-ci Recipe

A simple egg roll made with mostly basic ingredients. It may not be "authentic", and nothing fancy, but a nice recipe to complete a stir fry meal or as an appetizer. They can also be frozen uncooked, then fried just prior to serving!

Ingredients
  • 1lb ground pork(not sausage)
  • 1 bag Cole Slaw Mix
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 bag bean sprouts(I think this would be about 4oz or so)
  • 4-6 green onions, sliced(depending on size of each onion :)
  • 2T soy sauce(unless you are in the south and can get Dale's, then get that ;)
  • 2t Chinese 5 spice blend
  • dash of red pepper flakes or hot sauce
  • dash sesame oil(optional, but it's a huge flavor boost---a couple tsp sesame seeds can be toasted and subbed, too)
  • 1-2t each salt and fresh ground pepper(more to taste, PLEASE taste the filling before assembling the egg rolls...add seasonings as desired and for taste)
  • 1 package egg roll wrappers(15-20)
  • Peanut oil for frying

Directions
  1. Brown pork in small amount of oil adding garlic and green onions about halfway through cooking.
  2. Once done, add cabbage mix and cook about 3-5 minutes until cabbage cooks down and is tender.
  3. Add remaining ingredients(other than the wrappers and frying oil, of course ;) and continue to cook on low heat another few minutes to blend flavor.
  4. Again, PLEASE taste filling mixture before proceeding...egg rolls can be sooooooo good, but if you are just a bit short on seasoning, they will be very bland. If you aren't afraid of MSG, add a dash of it, too! :)
  5. Egg Rolls aren't hard to roll, but if you've never done it, it can be intimidating. I will try to give the best directions I can, and I am including photos, but if there are any questions, please ask!
  6. Place one egg roll wrapper in front of you, with a corner facing you directly.
  7. Put several T filling about 1 inch in front of that corner and extend toward both edges.
  8. Fold close corner up and just over filling.
  9. Tuck and fold one end over corner that just covered filling, then repeat with other side.
  10. Then, just roll the whole thing away from you until you get to end.
  11. Just at the end, before folding final corner over roll, WET edge of that corner then, fold over.
  12. Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers.
  13. Now, you can freeze these, as is, by wrapping tightly in freezer paper or cling and placing in good freezer bag.
  14. Or, heat about 3-4 inches peanut oil in dutch oven(I use my cast iron, of course ;), to about 350 degrees and fry 2-3 at a time, about 2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
  15. Drain on brown paper or paper towels
  16. Serve with various dipping sauces, like Hot Chinese Mustard, Sweet and Hot Thai Chili Sauce, soy, sweet and sour, etc.

Great job and wonderful recipe and pics! Well done..Great work my friend! 10 forks! Marky

I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I've never made egg rolls before...wanted to, just never did.I think its about time and I'm gonna use this recipe. Thanks Keni

Another winner, Keni!!

Yummy and easy!! Thanks, Keni!!! :)

Made these tonight with hamburger...results...really good!!! Will post the pics, courtesy of my artistic daughter :)

Love Egg rolls make mine this way using the coleslaw mix and everything quicker than all that chopping. yummy thanks high5

Delicious! Another keeper Keni. I made them to try out my new Fry Daddy and served them with Mattsbelly's beef and broccoli. I did not use the 5 spice powder as Mom can't have the anise due to medication interaction so I made my own mix of cinnamon, ginger, cloves and cardamom to use instead. The filling was very easy to make and I did let it cool a bit before filling the wrappers. The filling and the wrappers (20) came out even, too which is a first for me - I usually have some of one or the other left over - lol. Thank you for posting this one.

Hey Keni, These look really good. I would like to try them some time as an app for company. but I was wondering what are the 5 spices in the chinese 5 spice? I haven't seen that around here.

Hey Laurie! Usually 5spice includes: pepper, cinnamon, anise, cloves, and fennel, with or without ginger. You can use any Asian spice blend, or, just a dash of each/some of the above. :)

Super!

Nice one, Keni! I love egg rolls, and these do sound easy and delicious!

I have hear a couple of people mention your egg rolls so I had to come check them out. Great recipe Keni. I have never made an egg roll either and it seems you have got the ingredients down. Great instructions too. Makes me want to go get the stuff and try it tonight....

I like the way you put your recipes together..:-)~ You have a great weekend too. Hugs back... Jim

I made these for my party tonight. great recipe. i think next time i will use less of the chinese 5 seasoning and more of the soy sauce just personal preferance. but they were a big hit!! 5 forks!!

Hi keni...these little guys are the talk of the town, so I thought I would come and check them out...they sound great and look easy (one of my favorite combinations). I'll definitely make these in the not to far off future. Great pics and instructions! High-five!

Hey Keni - I just got a new deep fryer for my birthday and we made these at 9:00 pm last night after a long day of putting up a playset for the kids. They were great! Super easy to roll too, so thanks for the great instructions. This actually was the 1st time I've made egg rolls. Next time I'm going to freeze some so we have some when we throw together a quick Chinese meal! Just curious, have you ever made them with shrimp or chicken, because I think we are going to try a different meat next time? Thanks for the recipe!

We made these again today, but used chicken instead of ground pork. We loved them with the chicken - much preferred to the pork. We froze a bunch too this time around. Served them with whodunitrdr's Chicken and Shrimp Lo Mein.

Made this again last night for a party, not one left! Everyone loved them. didn't change the recipe at all except I baked them instead of frying them. Just brushed them with peanut oil first. Thanks Keni.

Thank you, again, Laurie..it's so nice to know they can be baked! :)

This is a very popular recipe! I love Laurie's idea of baking them!

Great recipe and photos Keni!

Oooh, I'm totally stealing this idea. Although not sure about the peanut oil as it's very expensive here. Now you have me curious about dale's. I have a friend in mississippi, maybe she'd be able to mail me a bottle so I can try it? I also must commend you for the step-by-step photos, not many people on here go through the trouble. 5 forks for this!
