Ingredients
  • Butter, softened
  • 4 slices crusty Italian, Pane or Rustic style bread
  • 1 apple, cored, peeled and sliced into medium slices
  • enough gruyere cheese slices to cover bread
  • dijon mustard, optional (my husband loves it, but I prefer it without - add it if it floats your boat!)
  • enough blueberry jam to spread on outside of grilled sandwich

Directions
  1. Generously butter the outside of 4 slices of bread.
  2. Lay 2 slices in a pan, buttered side down, and cover with cheese slices
  3. Next, add a layer of ham, then a layer of apple slices.
  4. Top sandwich with other slices of bread, butter side up.
  5. Cover sandwiches loosely with foil and heat on low heat until cheese layer begins to melt.
  6. Gently flip sandwich, keeping filling intact.
  7. No need to re-cover with foil at this point – just continue to heat until bottom of sandwich is browned.
  8. Cut each sandwich in half and spread top of each half with blueberry jam; serve immediately.
  9. NOTE: In place of blueberry jam, use a jalapeno jam for a different taste “bite” – my husband likes it even better this way. I’m a much “sweeter” person, so I go with the blueberry jam…or strawberry is good, too, especially if I have some homemade handy. I’m sure any jam flavor would go well with this sandwich!

Kind of like a Pannini, except it's not squished! I love hot sandwiches. They're delicious. Mango chutney tastes great on them. A high five from me Krum:)

In the mood for a light little snackie-poo, eh, Krummie? This read like a Lawrence Sanders novel!

I was looking at the pics, trying to figure out the exact type/slice/etc of ham you used. I NEED to make an exact replica of that great looking sandwich! Any suggestions? I just happen to have a jar of Red Pepper Jelly that needs to be on this sandwich. Just one half though. I am going to try your blueberry on the other half!

Sounds wonderful! I bet it would be good with goat cheese or even brie. Love it! Thanks.

Now I have go to Fleet Farm and buy some Malkin's Blueberry jam. I had enough of the man store over Christmas. Maybe I can get the hubby to go. High 5 from me. Ya know.-Lori

chavrie goat's cheese or any type of brie. The sweetness of the apple and the jam really compliments a cheese like goat!
