Ingredients

How to make it

  • In large stock pot, place chicken pieces, onion, parsley, celery, carrots and broth. Add water to cover chicken.
  • Add some seasonings(more will come later, so don't over season, now)
  • Simmer for about 2 hours until chicken is very tender and cooked through.
  • Remove chicken from pan onto large platter and let cool about 30 minutes.
  • Once cool enough to handle, carefully remove the meat from the bones and skin and return to stock pot.
  • Taste, reseason, and return to a simmer while preparing dumplings.
  • Add baking powder, parsley and season salt to flour and mix well to combine.
  • Add melted(slightly cooled) butter and mix slowly with fork until just mixed into flour mixture. This won't be crumbly like other biscuit type doughs, but will be slightly lumpy.
  • Slowly add milk to center of flour mixture and carefully mix until just combined. DO NOT OVER MIX
  • Drop dough by large spoonful into broth.
  • Let simmer, covered, about 10 minutes, carefully spoon broth over dumplings, then recover and simmer another 10-15 minutes until dumplings are cooked through.

    I Finally made Chicken dumplings for the first time! And Keni's recipe was a perfect start :) I used a whole fryer chicken like suggested, and followed everything to the letter. More in IMI: Chicken And Dumplings

    This looks so delicious! My Mom used make dumplings just like this over her chicken stew! I had forgotten how much I loved them - must try this soon!

    This was down home country goodness Keni! I've grown up on chicken and dumpling but always used tubed biscuits for the dumplings, which taste good, but I've always been on the hunt for homemade. I now have found the perfect dumplings, and I really do like them better than the canned! Delicious! Left a review in PSO's IMI thread below. :)

    This is very similar to the recipe I just tried! So I know it must be good! I think I'll try it on the stove top next time instead of the crockpot, so that I can make a bigger batch! Great recipe Keni!

    I made this for dinner last night and it was great! I made a couple of changes based on what I had on hand...I used veggie broth instead of chicken broth, and I ended up using frozen leg quarters because the chicken I had defrosted to make this smelled pretty funky. Everything else was done as written. Came out awesome! The dumplings are really great...this will be my go to chicken and dumplings recipe :)

    Wow these are really good. My husband and kids loved them! I made them for the hubby because he was wanting some. I've never made chicken and dumplings before because I never cared for them but I liked these. I will be making these again. I love that there are seasoning in the dumplings. Adds a little extra goodness to the dish. Thanks Keni I'll be making these again!

    Always wanted a southerner's recipe for making dumplings. I tried them for the first time years ago when I was there in AL. Never found a recipe on the west coast that even came close to being as good! Also your soup sounds wonderful too.

    i made a version similar to your version but i had to refrigerate, roll out and cut the biscuit dough. i think im gonna try your version next time and see if the refrigeration process really makes a difference. hopefully it doesnt! i will let you know. cant wait to try it out. yummy, keni!
