Ingredients
  • Deep-Fried Watermelon
  • 1 watermelon, about 10 pounds
  • 11 tablespoons flour
  • 7 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 egg whites, beaten
  • 3 cups vegetable oil for deep-frying use
  • Powdered sugar

Directions
  1. Cut the watermelon in half and scoop out the pulp. Remove any seeds from the pulp and cut the pulp into diamonds. Coat with flour.
  2. Mix the egg whites with cornstarch and a little water into a batter.
  3. Heat the oil in a wok or skillet over high heat to about 250 F, or until small bubbles appear around a 1-inch cube of day-old bread dropped into the oil.
  4. Dip the watermelon pieces in the batter and add to the oil. Deep-fry until the coating becomes firm. Turn off the heat, and continue to deep-fry the watermelon until light brown. Remove, drain well, sprinkle with the sugar, and serve. Makes 12 servings.

Oh my! Never heard of such a thing. But sounds good!

It's different alright!

Deep Fried Watermelon!!! It's a good thing I saw in the directions that you scoop out the watermelon. I had a visual of a new use for a turkey fryer. I'll have to try this out on my grandkids.

Have a watermellon in the freg. now. Will have to try this one.. Thanks

Oh wow....i have never heard of this before but i bet it tastes amazing. i will have to try this sometime. i love watermelon and pickled watermelon rind, dehydrated watermelon and can't wait to try this.

We could use my fried strawberries with this one,,a little collaborative nuttiness never hurts. You go girl and Iwill use my last watermelon from my garden!

I gotta try the strawberries also,, thanks Mystic... love your post!

Whoah. Who woulda thunk? :) I would have thought it had way too much water in it to deep fry, but you never know. Some weekend will have to give it a try.

Sounds like this should be on a menu in a scottish chippy(fish & chip shop)along with battered deep fried mars bars & eggs. My folks used to take me to a place when I was a kid which served battered banana & pineapple, deep fried. This does sound rather nice:-))

I'm not sure if I'd like this, but it sound interesting. Only in the south!

Wow, great for a BBQ!

Sounds good! Just bought a new deep frier trying to find some interesting things to do with it. Watermelon sounds perfect. THANKS!
