What is on your Thanksgiving Table?

  • linebb956 16 years ago
On ours ... we need supports under the table..
We have Turkey, that's a given, gravy, mashed garlic potatoes, cornbread dressing, butter-beans, sweet potatoes, several cranberry sauces.. homemade rolls, the faithful green bean casserole, relish tray on the side with stuffed celery and all sorts of pickles and such... Peach pie, Pumpkin pie, Pecan pie... and for those who still have room... ice cream or whipped cream... Coffee and Iced tea...
whew... Now we will have at least 18 here... and sometimes they bring in dishes too... so we add more SUPPORT to the table!
    How bout you?

Thanksgiving being my favorite holiday. I go way out.
Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, My fiances cooks egg noodles in turkey broth we use it as gravy over the mashed potatoes. I thought he was nuts when he wanted this...i need to tell you it is awesome like pot pie over mashedpotatoes. I make bakes sweets and sweet potato casserole. green bean casserole a must. homemade roll that my fiance makes. breaded cauliflower with sour cream (a german thing) both cranberry sauces and homemade relish with just chopped cranberries, orange marmalade and some mint...I may be missing something oh gravey too.
dessert: pumpkin roll, carrot cake, poundcake, 3 HUGE apple pies they must weigh10 pounds. 3 pumpkin, a pumpkin custard, maple syrup pie, pecan pie, coconut custard pie, jar mince meat pie, lemon merange, chocolate mousse pie, chocolate pudding meragne pie, butterscotch pie, usually if i have left over apples i will throw togehter the rest of the apples with some pear in it and cranberry and my a toppign from my cobbler posted with some oatmeal. I make home made whip cream and egg nog cream for pie toppings. I usually pie rum raisen ice cream, vanilla bean and some chocolate pie. oh and my incredible cranberry bars! we are set for the hoiday and weekend...we always have dessert but never enough turkey for sandwiches...i end up cooking my crockpot easy dish beef. or meatballs and gravy. I take off the entire week t prepare. I start by making all my crusts. Pumpkin roll I make in october and freeze and carrot cake. then i make the cranberry bars usually wednesday and get stuffing made. Even though t is alot...it is all easy clean up. I prep alot the day before like make casseroles. I just have to throw in the mashed and make the cauliflower.
I so love thanksgiving. Only time we get around family friends just eat talk, play, groan, laugh and no gifts attached just gift of love and friendship gathered around the table. a wonderful holiday.

Diva... you can get some saw horse brackets at the local hardware and lumber yards and make some up to fit UNDER THAT TABLE! OMG.. what a dinner!
Ya have to have leftover turkey... so we started doing a deep fried and a roasted... the deep fried keeps the guys outside and out of the way, at least the ones who just watch.. and we have lots of those.. This way they can watch the boiling kettle of hot grease! Then we have all those leftovers for watching football... I have not thought of mince in years... Not popular in this area, I love it.. Gonna have to make it..
When you do the pie crusts... do you freeze or put in frig?

OK - Linda, you'll laugh at this one. We do not care for turkey and yes, I can make a good one that IS juicy. Just not our favorite. We have odd variations since leaving the relatives back East. There are years I've made my turkey sausage lasagne because I can prepare it and then when we get home from a movie we open wine, start noshies, and pop it in the oven. Other years there's the craving for all of the side dishes we love such as the sweet potato pie, roasted vegetables, and everything else fattening. The family traditional dessert has become the Maple Pumpkin Pie which I've posted from epicurious.com which is divine. Plenty of wine flows, laughter fills the house, and we have a great time together. It's that warmth which makes me happiest.

I make them usually Tuesday. Tuesday i make the pecan pie, pumpkin, maple,Mincemeat
wednesday apple, pear cranberry, lemon, chocolate and butter scotch get done on stove top and throw them in to brown.
When you get a system down it goes easy. Having the pie crusts ready helps. all my pies are about 10 inches..

Turkey, we have 2 deep fryers.. but have not made it on the holiday yet.

Linda -- my husband used to be in that light industry (referred to as "decorative lights"). Oh, how many friends' homes were illuminated by us during those years I cannot imagine. Not our holiday - but to try using the product he brought home a faux tree and a slew of boxes of lights. All sorts. The midget lights, chasers, licensed character ones such as the Disney and Warner Bros. ones. He tore up his hands wrapping them around the branches and the tree was huge and hilarious. You just know that was a year I kept inviting people over for holiday dinners. We got a lot of laughter and fun going. Of course I served lasagnes that year.

includes the turkey of course, sage/onion stuffing , gravy, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, yam casserole, mac& cheese, mashed turnip, btternut squash and cranberry sauce (canned! my Grandnmother would have no other! LOL) Now for dessert if no one has exploded or have had a couple hours break in front of the TV with a football game, we have mincemeat pie, apple pie, and some variation on pumpkin like a cheesecake, bread pudding, cake or the traditional pie. I usually mix up the desert offerings each year (except for the mincemeat!)

Well, it might just be my fiance and I this year - some of his relatives will be out of town, and if anyone else comes, it will only be 3 others. Anyway, I'm cooking of course! Have a tentative menu started - Baked turkey, cornbread dressing, giblet gravy (which no one up here has tasted, and probably won't!), broccoli/rice casserole, mashed potatoes, gonna have some turkey gravy too, cranberry sauce, the canned jellied type here too....homemade rolls. Might do one other side, still thinking about the possibility. Dessert hasn't been thought out yet, probably have to make one of those peanut butter and chocolate cakes I've been drooling over. Probably some Pecan pie bars, and chocolate cream pie. Sure hate that most of the family's going to miss it! LOL

Hey Debbie... you show off your Texas cookin... You will be shocked at how much yankees like southern food! I was raised in Michigan and my mother and her family was from Miss and ala... we changed a lot of people on what they ate for dinner! We grew our own black eyes and lima as they did not sell them up there... and our greens.. Soon, we had those yankees asking if they could buy some produce! It got so our garden got bigger and bigger... we had pick your own... ...
Just cook up your favorites... they will love it!
Hey don't forget the Texas Pecan Pie!

Thanksgiving dinner depends on which side of the family we are celebrating with - my husband's 11 other siblings and their families (where we all contribute dishes to go with the turkey and gravy), or my small family. When I do the dinner, it's a combo of what I grew up with and what my husband's family ate: turkey, of course, slow roasted in the oven, with my late MIL's fantastic sage and "turkey parts" dressing stuffed in the turkey and in casserole dishes (we make LOTS as we have to have plenty of leftovers to see us through the winter!), mashed sour cream potatoes, rich turkey gravy, scalloped oysters, green bean casserole and one other veg casserole (usually cauliflower au gratin or a carrot dish), hot dinner rolls with lots of butter, relish tray with pickle wraps, green and black olives, garlic-stuffed olives and devilled eggs, rice pudding, overnight fruit and pasta ring salad, cranberry sauce and jellied, sweet potato casserole with praline topping, and we usually try one "new" dish just for kicks...for dessert, it's always pumpkin pie with "real" whipped cream, pecan pie, apple, pie, and an assortment of the holiday cookies and bars that have been started and frozen in early November for the Christmas season. I've probably missed something, but all I know for sure is that we eat until we are miserable, then fall into a food coma until we get hungry enough again for leftover turkey sandwiches and more dessert! Ohhhhh, how I love Thanksgiving!!!!

Linda, definitely going to cook southern stuff - my fiance likes most everything, pretty easy to please. I did Salisbury Steak yesterday, and made banana pudding for dessert, and everybody loved it, especially the pudding! It was the first time any of them had ever had it...lol. Seems funny to a southern gal, but things are different everywhere. Hey, I love lots of things I've had up here too - haven't gotten a bad bowl of soup yet! They put out some great soup. Just found out we may have an extra 3 for dinner. Sure hope so...it's so much nicer with lots of people around. Really looking forward to this Thanksgiving! I'll miss my family in Texas, but we're going to see them the week of Nov. 11...yay! Can't wait to see my baby boy!

Like Linda, we have one deep fried turkey, one roasted turkey and two extra turkey breasts for leftovers. (Thank goodness for two ovens at one house-my sis and I split the menu chores and for our nieces and cousins who don't cook, they contribute $$ or buy the rolls and veggie tray)
Corn bread stuffing like my mom used to make.
A chorizo sausage bread stuffing for Dad#2-spicy!
    Mashed potatoes
Bourbon mashed sweet potatoes with brown sugar thyme topping (Hearty boys)
    Green bean casserole
Balsalmic glazed roasted Brussel Sprouts, slivered proscuitto, an absolute
Carrot and Parsnips Julienne in orange juice with leeks
Corn pudding off the Jiffy box
    Creamed onions from scratch
one homemade cranberry sauce, it changes each year
jellied cranberry sauce, we have to have both!
    Ambrosia (Pampered Chef)
Dinner rolls from Publix-they appear on the table for dinner and then we have lots for sandwiches later
Romaine salad with pears, walnuts and crumbled blue, dressing varies
    Mississippi Mud Pie
Mince Pie-Meringue crust if the weather permits otherwise pastry crust
    Drunkin Pumpkin Pie
    Rum soaked Bundt Cake
    Upside down Apple Cranberry pie
Champagne and Sparkling Apple Cider for the kids
    Tons of take home containers.

We serve buffet style and set up a dessert station. Everyone comes at 11:00 a.m. and helps out where they can. We plan to eat at 3:00. After dinner, we play several rounds of Uno. Sandwiches around 8:00 p.m. and most leave by 9:00...however there have been some nights where we don't quit playing games and it becomes an all-nighter.

We celebrate Thanksgiving at a friends home. We all pitch in and bring dishes that are crowd pleaser's. The menu is traditional turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, fruit salads, green salads, pumpkin bars, cookies, pies, pound cakes, a huge variety of appetizers.

We eat early but talk till the cows come home. Since I have little family in my state we have made this holiday with our bests friends for years now. We serve at least 18-20 people. Even the guys join in and talk it up. we always say a different prayer since we share the same faith as well. Our kids are about grown as well so we all have a lot in common. Fun Holiday and cooking at its best.

God Bless all of you, my new cooking buddies, DonnaTMann~

Linda, Dinner is between 2 and 3 depending on the bird! C'mon over the more the merrier.
Posted: Creamed lilies of the field=creamed onions, Mincemeat Meringue pie, Carrots and Parsnips Julienne, Drunken Punkin PIe, and Simple Cranberry Sauce with Maple syrup is posted too. Our green bean casserole is straight off the Durkee can, same with the Jiffy corn casserole. TVFN has the Hearty Boys sweet potato recipe, it is the best I have ever tasted. Not one bit was left last year, it vanished. Same on the brussel sprouts, there are several similar to my recipe on the site already. Someone has posted the Mississippi Mud pie just like Mom made. I'll have to post the upside down Apple Cranberry pie.

I have to laugh, some people adore the green bean casserole and other can't abide the look of it. I tried to take it off the menu and there was a near riot for the g.b casserole lovers. AND when I tried to reduce the sodium and fat, I was told to knock it off and fix it the normal way. WELL THEN!!!

Our Uno games can last for hours, I think one year we didn't get home til 4 a.m. We all live within a two mile radius of each other and that is a very good thing. Another favorite is Scattergories or Trivial Pursuit, but the Uno is the most cut throat and competitive.

Mom and Dad always have Thanksgiving & Christmas at their house, and even though they are 70 this year, they still fix everything. Wil have about 15-20 (my cousins on my dad's side come with their families, too, since their parents passed away when they were all very young), Of course, we all bring something, but, Mom counted on folks bringing what they said they would the first time she had it (40 years ago), and they didn't, SO, she STILL fixes everything she wants, and the rest is just extra! We too need extra support for the tables! Every year she says she is cutting back, but, haven't seen it yet! LOL
Our tradition is that everyone will go outside and play football afterwards...funny, that "kids" are 40-53 now, and we grunt and groan like our parents used to! Finally get to sit at the grown-up table, though! LOL

Fresh Veggie Tray and Cheese N Crackers Tray for nibbling before hand
Nuts and Bolts throughout the house (her version of chex mix - will post when I find it)
Turkey with Mushroom / Waterchestnut Suffing
    Her Brown Turkey Gravy
    Dressing
    Mashed Potatoes
Dad's Sweet Potatoes - mashed with cinamon and a fresh squeezed orange, then put into a baking dish, covered wtih jumbo marshmallows, and placed under broiler for a couple of minutes
    Green Beans
    Homemade Mac N Cheese
    Corn
    My Dad's Slaw
    Cranberry Sauce
    Ham

On Thursday, one sister has to work and the other is visiting her daughter and family. So, we're hosting a small dinner with the daughter's boyfriend and family, some close friends who don't cook, and some work friends who are alone.

Then, on Sunday, the family will regather and do it all over again. I'm making different sides for the Sunday supper. I'm kind of happy that way I get to try two different sweet potatoe recipes, two different cranberries etc. I've happily collected all the recipes from this site and can't wait to give them whirl. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
