Ingredients

  • 1 lb. of dried peaches, split in half (organic if you can) shopping list
  • 1 fifth of vodka shopping list
  • 1 lb. of rock candy (ordered on line these days) shopping list
  • Aunt Mabel was lucky, she married Estin the entrepeneur of his time. He owned the Chevy dealership across the street, the gas station was attached and it had the original side-of -the road diner next to it. You could get homemade ice cream and they had jars and jars of old fashioned candy, horehound sticks, lollipops, and rock candy on ropes. Anytime she put up the peaches, she just shopped across the street. Estin would have a fit over her using his inventory until six weeks later when he could have a plastered peach! shopping list

How to make it

  • Mix in a crock and let stand six weeks. The longer the better.
  • Since Florida doesn't have the cellars and cool temps of Aunt Mabel's mountain home. I mix mine in a stoneware canister with lid and keep it in the back of the frig. It takes a lot longer to get the perfect flavor. Serve on toothpicks.
  • ***************************************************************
  • Alternately, Aunt Mabel would make up little tart tins of her lard and vinegar crust and put in a plastered peach and top it with freshly whipped cream.

This Plastered Peaches terrific Tina! It reminds me of the compote that Grandpop would keep. It had cherries, oranges, pears all pickled in such a special brew that little girls couldn't have any.

Deep in my heart, I think this recipe started with Great Uncle Roger's moonshine and Aunt Mabel switched to vodka when the still went silent. All I know is that Rog's house was way back in the hills, as far removed from civilization as possible, over the river and through the woods! Sing it now. I'll have to tell you about my encounter with the cow and the swinging bridge. Little guess on who won that stand-off.

Your desciption and the "roots" of the recipe are PRICELESS! Love that. I will try this in the late autumn when I can do it like your Aunt Mabel. Thanks for the great recipe and the wonderful memory you have of it!!!

I love family story recipes! We do this to fruits, too, but with brandy or rum.
