Ingredients
  • When such a person encounters a trigger, the trigger provokes activity in a part of the brain behind the eyes (hypothalamus) to send signals to the brainstem, which affects breathing, digestion, blood circulation, and pain perception. The neurotransmitters serotonin and noradrenaline are involved.
  • Common Triggers of Migraine
  • * Stress, worry, anxiety
  • * Menstruation
  • * Oral contraceptives
  • * Hunger, lack of sleep
  • * Glare, dazzle
  • * Temperature changes
  • * Fatigue
  • * Trauma to the head
  • * Hormone replacement therapy
  • * High humidity
  • * Excessive or too little sleep
  • * High altitude
  • * Overdose of vitamin A
  • * Drugs: nitroglycerin, estrogens, Apresoline (hydralazine), Zantac (ranitidine)
  • * Pungent odors
  • * Cold foods (ice cream)
  • Common Triggers of Migraine in Foods
  • * Chocolate, cocoa, alcohol, diet drinks containing aspartame.
  • * Meat, fish, poultry -- especially pickled and preserved.
  • * Dairy products, including all cheeses; excessive caffeine (cola, coffee).
  • * Bread, especially fresh homemade yeast bread; crackers; sourdough breads and rolls.
  • * Vegetables, such as beans (pole, lima, Italian fava, navy, pinto, garbanzo), snow peas, sauerkraut, raw onions, olives, and pickles.
  • * Fruits, such as raisins, red plums, figs, papaya, and passion fruit.
  • * Soups, canned. Watch out for monosodium glutamate (MSG) used to enhance flavor in soups.
  • * Desserts: chocolate ice cream, pudding, cookies, mincemeat pies, carob.
  • * Miscellaneous: pizza, cheese sauce, yeast (and extracts), meat tenderizers (Accent), soy sauce (those that contain a form of MSG), seasoned salt (which may also include MSG), frozen dinners, cheese blintzes, nuts, peanut butter, and marinated foods.
  • Foods Containing MSG
  • Partial list of foods containing monosodium glutamate:
  • * Frozen foods, such as dinner entrees.
  • * Canned and dry soups.
  • * Potato chips and prepared snacks.
  • * Many diet foods and weight-loss powder.
  • * Salami, bologna, pepperoni, and all cured and luncheon meats.
  • * Tomato sauce in cans; barbecue sauces in jars and cans.
  • * Most salad dressings and mayonnaise.
  • Misleading Terms for MSG
  • (Approved by the Food and Drug Administration for identification on food labels.)
  • * Hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP)
  • * Hydrolyzed plant protein (HPP)
  • * Natural flavors
  • * Flavoring
  • * Kombu extract
  • The above categories contain 10% to 30% monosodium glutamate. Tests conducted among migraine sufferers when MSG was omitted from the diet resulted in a decreased frequency of headache.
  • Lactose Intolerance
  • The inability to digest dairy products is a very common genetic disorder occurring-in more than two thirds of American blacks, American Indians, and Ashkenazi Jews and in 10% of whites of Scandinavian ancestry.
  • The most common symptoms of lactose intolerance are abdominal cramps and flatulence after drinking milk and ingesting other dairy products.
  • How lactose intolerance triggers migraine in adults and children is uncertain.
  • The Double-Edged Sword
  • Roasted coffee beans contain about 1/4 ounce of caffeine per pound. About 3/1000 of an ounce of caffeine is present in an average five ounce cup of coffee, and it can cure or cause a headache.
  • Caffeine constricts blood vessels, easing headaches caused by enlarged vessels. But coffee addicts develop tolerance to constricted vessels; when they reduce their caffeine intake, they suffer headaches as vessels enlarge.
  • Nitrates and Nitrites
  • These compounds received a fleeting bit of notoriety when, a few years ago, bacon and preserved meats were implicated as being capable of causing cancer. Some people temporarily gave up their morning bacon, and others passed up their lunchtime hot dog or pastrami sandwich "on the go." Without nitrate-nitrite preservatives, bacon, ham, and hot dogs would be a dull gray or dark brown. These compounds may cause cancer and a very sever migraine headache as well.
  • Rating Drinks and Hangovers
  • On a scale of 1 to 9, brandy heads the list of alcoholic drinks that can give you the biggest hangover and the worst migraine episode you ever endured. Red wine follows close behind, and rum and sherry are close contenders. Scotch, whiskey and beer are just about half as potent. White wine and gin are close. Vodka, rated about 1, is hardly in the running. The reasons for the high and lower ratings, scientists believe, are the chemical called congeners -- by products of fermentation and distillation.
  • Women Suffer Headache Incidence More Than Men
  • Women suffer more from headaches than men, a survey by the National Center for Health Statistic has revealed. The statistics also show that headaches are more frequent in early to middle years and decrease sharply in later years

Thanks for the information.

Been a migraine sufferer all my life. It is the worst! I never knew the food trigger list was that long. Thanks for the info.

One of my best friends started with a new dr for her migraines a few years ago, and she received the food list. It has helped her tremendously. She now has no caffeine, chocolate, or MSG in her diet. She gradually added back onions and cheese with no increase in migraines. HOWEVER, she takes NO over the counter pain meds such as tylenol or ibuprofen, because this will cause rebound headaches. She has had to suffer through rotator cuff surgery which caused frozen shoulder, and she has not been able to work for 2 years becuase of that, with absolutely NO pain meds because she didn't want rebound migraines. Dairy products are also hard on rheumetoid arthritis. Great post, Sherry.

*wink* Thank You!

The list you gave is very extensive... few people realize how much you have to give up... another trigger is flashing or flickering light... like sunlight through the trees when you are driving.

as a migraine sufferer thank you...

I do appreciate this post. I get them every now & then. Camera flashes also are not good at all for me. It wouldn't work for me to be famous!! And I have tendonitis, so no autographs!!

I am a RN also!! THis is quite informative.
And darn those hormones woman have which bother some monthly with those migranes!

I worked for years in the health care field as well, and am also a migraine sufferer. Thanks for this great information

I suffer from migranes, not often but when I do have them they are awful. Thank you for such an informative post.

Maybe you have a shorter list which would be easier to remember that tells what does not cause a migrane headache?

Missed this somehow. Have them all the time. But all those wonderful tasting triggers??! Oh my. Thanks for the input. I will review it often.

Thanks for the post, Very interesting. I have migranes all the time every since I had my hyster. And if I miss a dose of hormones I have the migrane for at least three days. Info printed. Thanks again Sue

Too much beef especially barbequed will do it. also, one of the worst migraines i ever had i was in a soybean feild watching an antique tractor show all day and not thinking ate a bunch of raw soybeans. boy was i ever sick the next couple days. only didnt see my boyfriend on the list who doesnt believe in migraines. thanks, holly

This is an EXCELLENT article for anyone who suffers with the horrible pain of migraines or knows of anyone who does. I have had headaches ever since I was a wee lass and when I was 39, I had a severe head concussion while skating. The back of my head hit the ice twice and I was gone for the count. When I woke up, I couldn't see straight and my jaw had been dislocated. Well, you can guess the rest. I've been having BAD migraines ever since. Thank you Minit for submitting this. High "5"!!!

Hi Tink,
This was so nice of you to pass this info on to so many that suffer from these terrible headaches. I used to have them often when I worked in a factory. The stabbing pain like someone was poking you with a sword through your head. I would get white spots in my vision and had a hard time seeing. I was onced hospitalized for a headache that lasted 3 days. The pain was so intensed I passed out and they could not wake me for several hours. Blood pressure fell very low. When I woke up. I had four nurses around my bed and could hardly see anything. My triggers were stress and the constant loud noise of machines running at the plant I worked at. Thank you so very much for posting this to help so many people out there.
love ya,
Paula
