Ingredients
  • Grandma's Apron -
  • I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
  • The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
  • It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears .
  • When Grandma rocked us to sleep, she would cover us with her Apron, we felt so snug wrapped in it.
  • From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
  • When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.
  • And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
  • Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
  • Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
  • From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

Directions
  1. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
  2. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
  3. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
  4. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
  5. Send this to those who would know, and love the story about Grandma's aprons.
  6. REMEMBER:
  7. Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to 'cool' - Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to 'thaw'.
  8. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs was on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from a Apron.
  9. Ahh yes, I remember it well !!!

Wow! Fantastic. Thanks for the wonderful memories.

Hello....
Thank-you so much for sharing Grandma's Apron!
Reading the 'little' story I couldn't help but have a
'little'tear in my eye....I am a Grandmother and a
Great-Grandmother, and i too, have an apron that I
wear when cooking Family Dinners! If i donot
wear it they children say that the food just does not
taste as good!!! I do not know about this...but I do know that
this particular apron holds many memories and i would not trade it for anything!
My Mother(now passed to Heaven) and her Mother, my Nana
before her, both always wore aprons, and dresses everyday! No
"pants and shorts" would you ever see on them! And so the generations go on, handing down simple, but memory-filled
experiences !
Blessings....mjcmcook....
A "5" FORKS...for your contribution to Memories !

*wink* Many memories of my G's Aprons, all the styles and colors, now I wear one myself! *smile*

This is good, I had this one time and sent it to my cousin, her hard drive recently crashed and she lost everything that was on it. It meant alot to her since she makes alot of aprons for family, friends and donates them also to organizations that are trying to raise money. Glad you posted it, I was able to resend it to her, you have my 5 for a great post.

I do remember my "grommies" wearin a apron as well as my aunt. Love this trip down memory lane. Makes me wish I wore an apron. (own one, just never remember to put it on - LOL)

Thank you so very much for this special memory!

Good Job! ^5

I sew and, believe it or not, aprons are making a comeback - BUT usually only for a fashion statement. I remember my grandmother's apron - a huge thing that I could wrap myself in. Such sweet memories. Thank you.

Oh Pat, now you made me shed some tears before heading out to work this morning! The memories came flooding back of my grandmas and great grandma and their full aprons (and their little fancy 1/2 aprons for entertaining, of course!)...I'd forgotten just how many functions that apron served!! Such wonderful memories - now I want to go out and buy an apron to cook in, so my grandchildren can have some of thos memories...they are PRICELESS! Thank you so much for sharing this with those of us old enough or lucky enough to remember~

I too am welling up! I can just see my gramma in her apron doing all of those things mentioned in the story. So heart-warming. What are our children and grandchildren going to remember?

This is wonderful........ yes my grandmother and mom wore an apron it served many purposes.......this is so touching and im tearful now .......thanks for the memories..........

I made my Grandma's apron in junior high home ec class. She cherished it. When she passed, I got it back filled with her spirit and love.

Wish I could sew! I do have a couple of my grandma's aprons...they held many things including clothes pins! She wore her aprons every day over her dresses.

As I read this.It made alot of sence.Thank you for posting this one.

I love aprons. Sure do remember my Grandma and my Mom's. Recently bought a pattern and material to make a few. Made a new one for my Mom, yesterday, will start on mine today.
