My mom's mac and cheese has "ruined" me- no other mac and cheese recipes I've ever eaten have compared to the unique taste of mom's. Worchestershire sauce and yellow mustard give it a unique flavor-the ultimate comfort food!

Ingredients
  • 3 Tbls flour
  • 2 Tbls butter
  • 1 1/2 tsp yellow mustard
  • 3 tsp worchestershire sauce
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 10 oz block extra sharp white cheddar (like Crackerbarrel) cheese, shredded
  • Just less than a 16 oz box of elbow pasta

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350*.
  2. Cook elbow macaroni according to box directions (drain and set aside).
  3. While pasta is cooking, melt the butter in a medium bowl.
  4. Combine butter w/all of the ingredients (EXCEPT the cheese) and microwave for 3 minutes, checking/stirring regularly as to not burn (cook time WILL vary w/microwave).
  5. Add cheese to thickened white sauce and microwave for 1 minute at 70% power (if cheese isn't completely melted upon stirring, microwave a little longer).
  6. Mix white sauce and pasta in a round 2 quart casserole dish...here's where mom and I differ. I prefer to serve now, all saucy and gooey while *mom prefers to bake for 20-30 minutes in the oven at 350 (until top is browned).

Oh Yes...This is a 5!!! I made this twice so far!GR members are probably thinking thats impossible because you just posted it here 30 minutes ago! LOL!But I got this when Lovestohost posted it on Allrecipes!

Well you got a favorable comment from lillancooks, I would say you have another winner here, a high five for this one also.

I always add mustard to my mac, but I have to admit I'm spoiled now since using Kozlick's Garlic Mustard (yay for the St. Lawrence Market!) - it adds a great hot element!

Made it a few times. It's awesome.

Wow..that's good!

Great!!! Thanks for the post:)

Hey this made #1 of the Most Interesting list. Congrats.

I love Mac&Cheese....It's possible I saw this on Allrecipes since I love that site too. Gotta try this one!

I made this for dinner tonight, and it was fabulous! I loved the addition of the worcestershire and mustard, it really gave it great flavor. Thanks for the recipe!

WOW!!! That's all I can say. This is amazing! I agree with you...don't much like baked mac and cheese, so I served it straight off the stove top. Thanks for a great recipe :-)

This was great, LTH! I did bake it because I love it baked. Thanks for the recipe!

Thanks for the recipe. I've finally found a homemade mac & cheese recipe that my boys will eat, they usually turn their nose up at the stuff (for some reason they prefer the boxed stuff), but they gobbled this down in no time, in fact I didn't get more than a bite. I was a little skepticle about using the microwave for the sauce but I had other stuff on the stove and the microwave worked perfect. Thanks so much.

I love using evaporated milk for cheese sauce - it makes it so velvety and smooth. Can't go wrong with Worcestershire sauce, either. Great recipe! Thanks for sharing. - Natalie

I sooooo can't wait to try this!

Yum! This is a great alternative to the normal yellow cheddar cheese in the mac! Has a nice bite! I agree with lovestohost that it's better before you bake it. Baking it makes it not near as creamy and liquid-y. I did only bake it for like 15 minutes though....so going the whole 25 woulda been way to long for my taste. Thanks for the great recipe!

Wow, how did I miss this one?

Yeah, what Wynne said! Gotta make this!

Wow! What a simple modification to classic mac and cheese but adds so much flavour.

5 forks! :)
