Ingredients
  • The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
  • It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
  • From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
  • When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.
  • And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
  • Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
  • Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
  • From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
  • In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
  • When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
  • When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

Directions
  1. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an Apron. Isn't a little sad aprons are basically a thing of the past and our children won't ever know about them?

I love this Angel!! I'm going out to buy one today! (seriously!)

Very good, I need a bigger apron

Success! I found aprons at Kmart. I found a full one, but it comes to about knee length. They also had half ones that simply covered the bottom half of you. You ROCK Angel. Thank you again!

Aprons Still Live In The Restaurant Industry!! We wear aprons every day @ work from the front of the house to the back of the house..I even bought some nice fancy Circulon brand aprons for cookin' @ home. Now my two brothers and some friends(who are not chefs) bought some to wear at home as they BBQ..Love em' GR8T POST

I have 3 aprons and 1 that I have to piece together and sew. I still love them. Matter of fact, I have an apron I need to piece together and sew for my daughter-in-law for Christmas. I should get that one done early, huh? I love this post, and thank you for sharing...Cheryl

The memories came flooding back reading this, Angelgal. My Oma always wore an apron, and most of the time so did my Mom. As kids growing up we didn't have a lot of clothes, so my Mom was particular about the ones we did have. No leaving them lying around on the floor when we changed our clothes after school. We always came home for lunch and Mom didn't want us getting food stains on our dresses so she had us wear these slip-over- your-head-cover-you-from-head-to-knees aprons. One day I forgot to take it off before I returned to school, and of course everyone laughed when I took off my coat and still had on my long apron. Sigh, it's funny now, but it was embarrassing then,LOL. I have several aprons, just the kind that go from waist to knees, that my aunts made from red gingham and a star pattern embroidered along the bottom. I wear them when I'm baking, and cooking and I always think of those loved ones that are gone now. Sorry to ramble on. Thanks for the post.

I collect vintage aprons, and I just love them. I wish I had a great way to display them, but I really don't. Stringing a line and clothespinning them to it near the top of my kitchen walls has occurred to me, but that's just not in keeping with the style of my kitchen at all. I have some wonderfully kitschy mid-century aprons that I like to wear when I'm having guests over for dinner -- it's really fun.

That is really terrific and very thoughtful of you to post. I have many of my mother's aprons and I cherish them and what you have posted gives them even more meaning and makes them more special.
Thank you , as usual is not suffient but I say it to you anyway..thanks, ^5

Great post. I remember my Grandma Duda always wore an apron when we would come over. It seemed natural to wear aprons while cooking or baking. They probably felt naked without it!

Well they won't be a thing of the past if I have anything to do with it!! I love aprons, I'm a messy cooker so I need one! Great post.

*wink* I am an avid vintage apron wearer! This summer I aquired one from the 50's, a french maid red checkered style with ruffled edging...ooohlala!*smile*

Great post. gets 5 for sure, Lucy

You really brought a tear to my eye. What great memories. I too collect aprons. They hang all over my kitchen and I have a coat tree that holds many of them. Every restaurant I worked in I kept the apron. Now one of my annual gifts from friends are aprons. Thank you sooooooo much!~~~~~~~~Sas

Loving memorys and heart stirring of things past and present for some thanks Angelgal

Love this!

I have inherited all my grandmother's aprons. I remember an apron being my first sewing project for Home Ec class!
Thanks for the memories.

I think every kitchen memory I have, someone if not everyone was wearing an apron. I often made my own and they are so simple to whip up. Love this bit of nostalgic history. Thanks so much Angel! High "5"

Love it Sissy. I say everyone should cook in nothing but an apron. On second thought, nahhh
