Ingredients
  • 1 stick Butter (do not use margarine!)
  • 1 C packed Brown Sugar
  • 2 T Corn Syrup
  • 5 large Eggs
  • 1 1/2 C half & half
  • 1 t Vanilla
  • 1 loaf Italian or French Bread

Directions
  1. In a small saucepan, melt first three ingredients, over moderate heat, stirring until smooth
  2. Pour into lightly greased 13x9 glass baking dish.
  3. Cut 6-8 1" thick slices of bread and trim crusts. Do not use ends.
  4. Arrange bread slices in one layer in baking dish, squeezing them slightly to fit if necessary.
  5. In a bowl, whisk eggs, half & half and vanilla until mixed well and pour evenly over bread.
  6. Cover and chill overnight.
  7. Before baking, remove and let set until back to room temperature.
  8. Uncover, and bake 40 minutes at 350* until edges are puffed and pale golden.

I found this recipe on epicurious.com and made it this weekend. I'm 47 and this is the aboslute best French Toast I have ever had! It is so easy and terribly sinful. I'm giving you a 5 of course. I was going to share it on the site, but you beat me to it. I'd recommend this to anyone.

Question: You say to cut off the crusts, but I still see them on the bread in the picture. Is this just a guideline? Even still, I want to just reach through the screen, pluck this out and eat it. None for you! All mine! lol

Alterations


When I made this, I left the crusts on and it was just fine - they make the edges a little chewy.


I had the thought of chopping up nuts for the bottom layer...didn't think my family would go for it though!
