This was my f-i-l's recipe. It has been my fall back recipe (mostly in fall/winter) for 20 years. It's very easy, yet tasty, comfort food. Perfect for a weekday dinner.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 Tbls prepared mustard (Frenchs)
  • 1 Tbls Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp prepared horseradish (or more)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms (baby portobello, crimini, etc.)(optional)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (optional)
  • 2 Tbls chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Directions
  1. In a bowl, combine soup, mustard, worcestershire, and horseradish; blend well. set aside.
  2. In another bowl, lightly beat the egg;
  3. Add bread crumbs, onion, salt, pepper and 1/4 cup of the soup mixture;
  4. Add ground beef and mix together thoroughly but gently;
  5. Shape into patties.
  6. In a large skillet, brown patties (if not using lean beef, drain after browning)
  7. I brown about 2 minutes on one side then flip;
  8. Combine remaining soup mixture with water; pour over patties;
  9. Cover and cook over low heat for approx. 10 - 15 minutes or until meat is done.
  10. I add sour cream and mushrooms in last 3 minutes.
  11. Remove patties to serving platter, spoon sauce over meat. Sprinkle with parsley (if using)
  12. I serve with potatoes or rice with sauce over.

Comfort food, for sure...horseradish is the surprise for me...when I make it, is it okay if I use my sub for cream soups...please?? Otherwise, I'll make it JUST like you said. ;) Great post and pics, darlin'...nice addition. :)

Oh Wow! I make this recipe too~ don't remember where it came from though. It is delicious!

Great ingredients! The horseradish and Worcestershire add some needed zip to this long time favorite! YUM!

I make a similar recipe but this looks even better...am bookmarking this!

Actually the pic looks very good. Can I substitute homeade mushroom souop for that canned stuff?

OMG. This looks great. Thank you!

Thank you all so very much for your kind comments. ;')

Oh Boy!!!!!

I let my husband pick a recipe from ALL the ones I bookmarked and he picked this one! Woo hoo! I made it last night, and we LOVED it. I felt like I was eating something my grandma would have made for her kids. So good. Thank you!

Out of control good! Thanks JJ for a great recipe...followed to the "T" ....except for one lil change...I used Keni's Make It Yourself-Condensed Cream O' Soup in place of the canned....wonderful! Family loved it....meat was very moist and tender and great flavors!

Okay, jj, I finally got to get this rated and add my pic! :) Wonderful...I made some minor changes(you know how it is), using my own cream of soup, dijon rather than yellow mustard and my meat was a beef/venison combo cus that's 'bout all I use. :) Anyway, the flavor was great, and it was very rich and hearty, of course! Served it with whipped taters and corn....comfort food defined...hehehe

Simply wonderful!! Makes me hungry!

OMG!My Aunt By Marriage made a dish like this.I'm not so sure what she added to hers though.Too bad that I don't have the recipe.I know that my Uncle wouldn't give it to me.

Great pictures and terrific recipe. Just like mom used to make....a great comfort dish in times of stress. Delicious.
