Superb Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

A delicious and filling sandwich, perfect for a hearty lunch OR dinner!

Ingredients
  • 4 each White bread slices
  • (healthier choice --- whole wheat bread)
  • as needed --- Butter
  • 2 oz Sliced turkey or chicken breast
  • 2 oz Sliced ham
  • 2 oz Sliced Swiss cheese
  • 2 Eggs, beaten
  • 4 tbsp Milk
  • salt & pepper to taste

Directions
  1. Place the bread on a clean work surface.
  2. Spread the tops with butter.
  3. Place the turkey, ham, and cheese slices on one of the pieces of bread.
  4. Top with the remaining slice of bread, buttered side down.
  5. Secure the sandwich with 2 picks placed in opposite corners.
  6. Beat the egg and milk together.
  7. Dip the sandwich in the batter until it is completely coated and the liquid has partially soaked into the bread.
  8. Fry the sandwich in deep fat at 375°F until golden brown.
  9. Cut in half or quarters, and serve immediately.
  10. Serve with a side salad, and you've got yourself a hit!

  13. Omit the picks and cook on a griddle until browned on both sides.

Mmmmm.... I love monte cristos... Here's something to try- a local diner finishes them off with a dusting of powdered sugar and serves it up with plum sauce to dip. Actually quite good!


Mmmmmmmmm, elaine... you push all of my buttons! 5. Maybe using a small bbQ basket would make it easier to fry them... funny markings but so what? Thanks!

This sounds exactly like the way I make it. The only difference is we also put real maple syrup over it. Yum!

I love Bennigans Monte Cristo. I limit myself from going there cause it hurts when I'm done eating. Now I can hurt myself at home..Really though thanks for the recipe. I'll be making it soon.

Sounds really good. At Disney World they make this sandwich and dust it with powdered sugar! It is at the Pirates of the Caribbean. yummy!!!

Alterations


I also serve it with some real maple syrup poured over the top. Then just eat with a knife and fork!


Make it a double decker and a side of Strawberry Jam! I cant wait to make this.
