4 B's tomato soup is a Montana legend, so, another one we came up with, together. This delicious creamy tomato soup is, according to him, wonderfully close to the original. MUST serve with grilled cheese, of course! ;)

Keni what does the baking soda do for this? otherwise I love it thanks bunches
keni 1 year, 1 month ago said:
It does a couple things, actually...it helps to cut the acid taste from the tomatoes, but it also helps to ensure the half and half doesn't curdle...I did a taste test, once...made it all as above, but didn't add the soda til just after the half and half...tasted before and after adding soda, and there was a definite taste difference. Not because the milk had turned, yet, just whatever chemical changes the soda causes, it really does change the taste. :)

I've been wanting a tomato soup recipe, so consider this one saved!

I just love that it has no "thickener" in it.
keni 1 year, 1 month ago said:
Hey mimosa...nope, none needed...that's what I meant about the tomatoes being key...the crushed gives just the right texture, then add half as many of the SMALL diced, and it's just perfect, we think....and, then the creaminess, of course :)

I've been meaning to try this for some time...and finally did! Me and my daughter devoured ours and yes, I served it with a grilled cheese on the side! Never been to a 4 B's, but they sure do have good soup!

Wonderful post! Tomato is one of my favorite soups since childhood and that was a long, long time ago! Can't wait to give this a try!

Hey Keni, I went ahead and made this with our garden tomatoes. I parboiled them, removed the skins. I crushed a part of them, and a part of them I chopped fine. I used twice the amount of tomatoes, since I then cooked them down to reduce the tomato juice and added a tbsp. of tomato paste to give it a more of a canned, or acidic flavor. The soup tasted delicious, the only thing is, that pt. of half and half really turned it kind of pink. Yours all look more red, I guesse because of the canned tomatoes. Lem me assure you, it still tasted great! And I got rid of my tomatoes! Added my picture.

Had some cut up tomatoes in the freezer. Used a food mill on them to extract the juice and pulp. Turned out more watery than crushed tomatoes. Should have gone along the line of what jules did.
Will have to make this again properly.
