Ingredients

How to make it

  • Place the potatoes in a saucepan of water to cover, and bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • Reduce heat, and simmer until the potatoes are cooked through but still firm, about 20 minutes.
  • Remove from the water, cool slightly and peel the cooked potatoes while still warm.
  • Shred the potatoes with a box grater, and place the shredded potatoes in a bowl.
  • Lightly mix in the chives, cheese, salt, and pepper.
  • Mold by handfuls into large "cigars" and place on a lined cookie sheet.
  • Refrigerate for at least 1/2 hour.
  • Heat oil in deep fryer.
  • Cut into 1 inch pieces.
  • Toss about six into a small bowl of flour and shake them off a little before placing in the deep fryer.
  • Fry until golden brown and drain on paper towels.

Confused by one detail, or rather, lack there of.... It says "heat oil in a deep fryer, but says nothing about the temperature. One thing I am going to try instead when I make these is using one of those 5 or 6 cheese Mexican cheese blends, and in addition to, or substitute for the chives, is going to be seeded and diced small, are jalapeƱos.

Good recipe. I like the cheddar and chives combination. Used this recipe with another tater tot recipe for its bake instructions. See Tater Tots for more details.

Sounds mouthwatering. I never thought of doing tater tots from scratch, but very appealing because I don't like buying processed foods. Thanks for sharing!

This was very good! The only thing I did differently was to add more cheddar and salt. I also added some onion powder. It is a long process and a little messy but its worth it! This is a great recipe because you can customize it to meet your tastes! I added my photo:)
