Ever get stuck in the middle of a recipe, because you did not check to see if you had all of the ingredients, Well no more. I have compiled a list of Emergency Substitutions. Photo is mine.
Ingredients
- baking powder -1 tsp.= ¼ tsp. baking soda plus ½ tsp.cream of tartar shopping list
- buttermilk -1 cup =1 cup plain yogurt or 1Tbs. vinegar plus milk to equal 1 cup or 1Tbs. lemon juice plus milk to equal 1 cup shopping list
- cake flour -1 cup= 1 cup minus 2 Tbs. sifted all- purpose flour shopping list
- chocolate,unsweetened -1-oz = 3 Tbs unsweetened cocoa plus 1Tbs. butter or margarine shopping list
- cornstarch - 1 Tbs.= 2 Tbs. all-purpose flour shopping list
- corn syrup - 2 cups = 1 cup granulated sugar shopping list
- Cream, Heavy (See Cream, Whipping) shopping list
- Cream, Light - 1 cup = 1 ½ Tbs, butter plus whole milk to equal 1 shopping list

- Cream, Whipping -1 cup = 1/3 cup butter plus whole milk to equal 1 cup shopping list
- egg yolk -2 yolks = 1 whole egg ( can be used for shopping list
- baking but not for a piecrust shopping list
- or a sauce) shopping list
- herbs, fresh -1 Tbs.= 1 tsp. dried herbs shopping list
- honey -1 cup = 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar shopping list
- lemon juice - 1 Tbs.= 1 Tbs. distilled white vinegar shopping list
- milk, skim -1 cup = 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk plus ¾ cup water shopping list
- milk, whole -1 cup = ½ cup evaporated milk plus ½ cup water shopping list
- molasses - 1 cup = ¾ cup granulated sugar shopping list
- mushrooms, fresh -1 lb.= 12 ounces canned mushrooms, drained shopping list
- mustard, dry - 1 tsp = 1 Tbs. prepared mustard shopping list
- sour cream - 1 cup = 3 Tbs. butter plus buttermilk or yogurt to equal 1 cup shopping list
- sugar, brown -1 cup =1 cup granulated sugar shopping list
- sugar, Granulated - 1 cup = 1 ¾ cups confectioners' sugar shopping list
- ( Do not substitute for baking ) shopping list
- tomato juice -3 cups = 1 ¾ cups tomato sauce plus1 1/2 cups water or 1 can ( 6-oz size) tomato paste plus 3 cans water, dash each salt + sugar shopping list
- tomato sauce - 1 cup = 1 can ( 3-oz size) tomato paste plus 3 cans water, dash each salt + sugar shopping list
- yogurt - 1 cup = 1 cup buttermilk shopping list
How to make it
- NOTE: MY EMERGENCY SUBSTITUTIONS
- My Note: In addition to the above Substitution, Applesauce has been substituted for the following: Oil, Butter, Margarine, Eggs, and Sugar.
