My mother used to make this and I have been threatening my Husband for a number of years that I would make it for him.. he HATES sauerkraut. Mean aren't I??? This is the moistest cake, and the 'kraut chopped up superfine reminds one of coconut ! Go Figure :-) Be sure to use a white cake frosting on it like Shirleyoma, is my advice too. Thanks for the recipe and the reminder to get to baking again soon.

Wow, this sounds scary! LOL I am sure it is great though...I would have to avoid telling my family about the kraut.

Thank you so much. I have looked for this recipe for many years. My grandmother made this and it is the best of cakes to have for sunday dinner.

Just saw this picture when I was on your homepage, Shirleyoma, so of course I had to check it out. That looks DEVINE and sounds a bit weird, but that's exactly why I MUST try it!! We all love kraut here, so I think it will be wonderful and moist...I will let you know (I won't be baking until the summer heat ends, darn).

Shirley,
This looks so good, but I can't stand sauerkraut, does it tastes like sauerkraut after it's baked? Just looking for something other than coconut and if it doesn't taste like sauerkraut, it may work.

Oh yeah, have had this and is so moist from the sauerkraut and no kraut taste. This is unbelievable.
Great post

I LOVE sauerkraut and I LOVE chocolate cakes made with cocoa. I had this recipe and lost it so I thank you very much OmaShirley.
P.S. This really is a pic of me back in 1997 when I taught behavioral and learning disabled / challenged students in High School.

I have never used sauerkraut in a cake before, but have seen it. Yours looks so good that it will just have to be an attempt soon. I love
chocolate anything, and your cake looks very tempting to say the least.

My husband is crazy for this cake. His mother made it for years! He was delighted when I found it-so my next sourkraut purchase will be for this cake. He said it's the closest thing to chocolate heaven that there is...Thanks so much!

I can't believe it! Just what I was looking for. Can't wait to give it a try. I have tasted a cake like this and loved it but didn't have the recipe. Have you ever heard of a Chocolate Prune Cake? Happy Baking! Thanks again.

Sauerkraut cake, what a great idea - thanks! I'm more into kimchi than sauerkraut, though I don't think kimchi would work as well here ;-)

This is definetely a yummy cake! The saurkraut was always around since I am part Polish, Italian and Croatian. Seems like a staple item at our house when I was growing up. My mom would make this cake and we thought she was "full of baloney" by telling us what was in it. I guess we were thinking about polish sausage to go in the cake as well...I don't know! LOL Jett
