Pinkpasta / All my dishes 2 years, 3 months ago
This is a recipe from Paula Deen. I've made it SO many times for my family as well as a dessert to take to parties. You MUST try this if you like banana pudding!! It's really not your traditional southern recipe at all. (looks pretty too.)

What would be a good alternative to the Chessmen cookies as they are not available in my area?

You can use any other brand, just make sure it's a plain shortbread cookie so it doesn't alter the taste of the recipe. I did this once but unfortunately I don't remember what brand I used. It may have even been the store brand shortbread cookie. It came out just a tasty, and much less expensive. (Pepperidge Farm cookies are always more expensive.) Let me know how it turns out! :)

I have made this previously. This is good and simple to make. It was gobbled up each time I made it. The Chessman cookies seem to hold up better than vanilla wafers, which get soggy quickly. Of course, if you eat it all in one sitting, that isn't a problem.

I'm so glad all of you like this recipe. Chessmen cookies do hold up longer, but it's also great using vanilla wafers too. I've made it that way myself. I think you'll agree that either way, you just can't go wrong! (My girls even love it w/out the cookies, just served straight up in a bowl!!) Thanks for writing... :)

Hey y'all...LOL
I have made this SO many times! The most memorable time was last Thanksgiving when I was visiting some friends in Houston, TX. I wanted to make a contribution to the dinner, and my friend agreed that I could do the banana puddin' (she had already baked pecan pie tarts, sweet potato pies, pineapple-upside down cake). Needless to say, she was surprised that the puddin' part was made from instant (straight-out-of-a-box), not the double-boiler method. I doubled the recipe, made a huge pan to take to the family dinner, and everyone loved it! (I also made a smaller pan to leave at my friend's....and left the recipe, of course)
gotta love that Paula Deen!!

HI Debbie!
This is a great recipe and the last time I made it, I used chocolate Chessmen cookies, which were
really good and colorful! Not always easy to find, however, but shortbread cookies are sooo much better than the vanilla wafers!

I looooOOOooove this recipe and have made it several times. The shortbread cookies make all the difference in the world....much better than Nilla Wafers in this. And I love Eagle Brand...it transforms everything its introduced to. This is a really delicious banana pudding - and you get 15 forks from me. Only five are showing, but trust me - there two more layers back there. Thanks! :) Vickie
