This is a recipe from Paula Deen. I've made it SO many times for my family as well as a dessert to take to parties. You MUST try this if you like banana pudding!! It's really not your traditional southern recipe at all. (looks pretty too.)

Ingredients
  • 2 bags Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies (these are shortbread cookies)
  • 6 to 8 ripe bananas, sliced (NOT overly ripened. They turn brown very fast!)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 (5 ounce) box instant French Vanilla pudding
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping thawed, or equal amount sweetened whipped cream

Directions
  1. Line the bottom of a 13" by 9" by 2 " dish with bag of cookies and layer bananas on top.
  2. In a bowl, combine the milk and boxed pudding mix; blend well using a hand-held electric mixer. Using another bowl, combine the cream cheese and condensed milk together and mix until smooth. Fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture. Add the cream cheese mixture t o the pudding mixture and stir until well blended.
  3. Pour the mixture over the cookies and bananas and cover with the remaining cookies. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

What would be a good alternative to the Chessmen cookies as they are not available in my area?

You can use any other brand, just make sure it's a plain shortbread cookie so it doesn't alter the taste of the recipe. I did this once but unfortunately I don't remember what brand I used. It may have even been the store brand shortbread cookie. It came out just a tasty, and much less expensive. (Pepperidge Farm cookies are always more expensive.) Let me know how it turns out! :)

I love this recipe, I just made it for a girls night and man is it fantastic. Great post.

Ive made this recipe several times... I just used plain vanilla wafers.... Its really a great recipe....

I think I will make this for my granddaughter tomorrow when she visits. looks good.

I have made this previously. This is good and simple to make. It was gobbled up each time I made it. The Chessman cookies seem to hold up better than vanilla wafers, which get soggy quickly. Of course, if you eat it all in one sitting, that isn't a problem.

I'm so glad all of you like this recipe. Chessmen cookies do hold up longer, but it's also great using vanilla wafers too. I've made it that way myself. I think you'll agree that either way, you just can't go wrong! (My girls even love it w/out the cookies, just served straight up in a bowl!!) Thanks for writing... :)

Paula is my favorite on Foodnetwork - I've printed off her recipe, but never made it...glad to hear it's such a hit with so many people here! Now I will definitely have to get it made!!

Krumkake...OMG! This is one of the best desserts I've ever had! Sounds too simple to be so good...but it truly it!

PS... to Krumkate,
Love the picture, and your motto! I agree completely!!!

Our guys are going to the Panthers/Colts game in Charlotte so I'm having a "Girl's Nite In" Oct.27th & told everyone to come over here for a jamma-party ! That being said,I'm gonna make this for that !!!
btw,all of ya'll are invited...ladies,ONLY please!lol!

Very very good. I think this is a keeper.

Mmm sweetened condensed milk - I really should try this and use condensed milk more often in my desserts! Thanks for sharing yet another successful dessert...saving and looking forward to trying!

THIS IS AWESOME...I HAVE MADE THE BEFORE...AND LOVED IT....
YOU GUYS HAVE TO MAKE IT....

Wonderful recipe thanks!

I love this recipe. I take it to pot luck lunches at work and to church often.
Thanks, Ferri

Hey y'all...LOL

I have made this SO many times! The most memorable time was last Thanksgiving when I was visiting some friends in Houston, TX. I wanted to make a contribution to the dinner, and my friend agreed that I could do the banana puddin' (she had already baked pecan pie tarts, sweet potato pies, pineapple-upside down cake). Needless to say, she was surprised that the puddin' part was made from instant (straight-out-of-a-box), not the double-boiler method. I doubled the recipe, made a huge pan to take to the family dinner, and everyone loved it! (I also made a smaller pan to leave at my friend's....and left the recipe, of course)

gotta love that Paula Deen!!

Ms pinkpasta please don't take this as a cut
but your using bannanas that are to ripe'
try using a nanner that is starting to turn.
it is more flaverfull,

Hi Debbie I am going to try this lovely banana pudding recipe and get back to you.
Printed and saved!
Michael

I have made this and it is simply the best banana pudding ever....very rich and decadent. Love the Chessmen cookies!!

Oh my goodness! deee - licious!

HI Debbie!
This is a great recipe and the last time I made it, I used chocolate Chessmen cookies, which were
really good and colorful! Not always easy to find, however, but shortbread cookies are sooo much better than the vanilla wafers!

I looooOOOooove this recipe and have made it several times. The shortbread cookies make all the difference in the world....much better than Nilla Wafers in this. And I love Eagle Brand...it transforms everything its introduced to. This is a really delicious banana pudding - and you get 15 forks from me. Only five are showing, but trust me - there two more layers back there. Thanks! :) Vickie

This does sound delicious! The ingredients seem to really go well together.

Damn girl now you're cooking with gas, this recipe is the BOMB! WOW WEE!
