Fond memories, my Uncle owned a small country store and as a child I can remember the young teenage farmhands being brought in by truck load each weekday to buy their noonmeal. Sometimes instead of sardines it was a can of vienna sausage, hoop cheese, crackers, onion and bottle of pop. If they had extra money maybe a Moon Pie too. Heck I wouldn't mind a lunch like that today lol lol

Thanks for this recipe. It's really educational. And yes as someone said, it's like a ploughmans lunch. Just substitute some tongue for the baloney.

Sounds interesting, but why is Grouprecipes flagging it as 'vegetarian'? Fish aren't on a vegetarinan diet.

Wow...it is nice to see a reminder of the old south. This is what my father spoke of often. AND I loved going to the old grocery to get the hoop cheese and a coke, that was a treat.

I love sardines and cheese but what is hoop cheese? The directions are fantastic. I will have a nice nap after lunch. Thanks for the post.

When I was kid we ate hoop cheese and liver sausage with saltine crackers and Pepsi cola.
At other times it was pickled pigs feet and cheese crackers and a small coke.
