Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup popcorn kernels
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 Brown Lunch Bag
  • 1 Stapler and 2 staples

Directions
  1. In a small bowl, mix together all the ingredients, so that the kernels are coated nicely with the oil and salt.
  2. Pour the kernels into the bottom of the lunch bag.
  3. Make two 1/2 inch folds from the top of the bag creating a seal.
  4. Using Two Staples (no more, no less!) staple the bag shut.
  5. Lay the bag on its side - allowing the kernels to spread out in a single layer.
  6. Microwave on high for 2-3 minutes.
  7. When the kernels are popping only more than every 3 seconds - it is done. Anymore and it will burn!
  8. Carefully remove the popcorn from the bag - there will be lots of hot steam.
  9. Flavor the popcorn with anything you like and enjoy!
  10. (**Note**) Putting metal in the microwave is not safe, but two staples is not enough metal to cause any unwanted problems. This has been tested and confirmed by several sources, so this method is considered safe.

This was so wonderful! I skipped the butter as you suggested and gave hot sauce a try. I was VERY shocked at how good this was. I never knew.

Thanks so much.

This sounds very interesting. As we don't have an air-popper at the moment, I'll have to give it a try.

I was looking for a way to do this and this works great

Great suggestion to use a grocery bag to up the quantity. How much popcorn did you put in the big bag?

Actually, you don't even need the oil. You can just pop plain old corn if you want to cut out the fat and sodium.

Trying this tonight! I used to pop in a pot on the stove, but somehow that always resulted in my flailing around the kitchen trying to figure out how to slow the tide of popcorn. Thanks! Tried it. Loved it!! I like to defy the microwave by using staples.

Tried this great recipe last night. We loved it! After the popcorn was popped we misted it lightly with olive oil spray and tossed it with parmesan cheese. Yummmmmm! Thanks so much for posting!

This is my favorite way to cook popcorn! You can also use clear tape to seal the bag.
I like a little cayenne pepper and paprika for seasoning.

I made this when my kids were small(10 yrs. ago) & I used a small piece of tape (I don't recommend a twist tie...it started on fire lol) We made it dry & sprayed on butter spray & salted it. They loved it!!! Glad to see more people have discovered it!!!

Whatever you do, do not add garlic powder before popping. stinky burnt popcorn stench lingers. = )

Made this today and it was super, and a lot less in fat then popping in oil.

Will be making this all the time,

Thanks\
Janet

DELICIOUS! My family only likes microwave popcorn but I don't like serving it due to the current health reports. This recipe DOES work and I know what ingredients are used. Thanks for posting!

I'm so excited to try this. We're big popcorn eaters! Thanks for sharing:)

This works great! We tossed on a little taco seasoning and yum!

Great reicpes for a popcorn but love butter!

This is a great idea... I have a bowl that was made to pop corn in the micro wave.. but this is good.. No dishes! The bagged corn u buy has so much salt... gak!
Great post!

I will never have commercial popcorn *ever* again! This popcorn is so easy and good that I just can't believe it! I use those cheap chopsticks that you have to pull apart before using with your Chinese food. I just don't pull them apart and I use them as a clip that slides over a single fold in the top of my paper lunch bag. Easy and perfect. I then season with whatever comes to mind at the moment. Right now it has been a little grated cheddar cheese, some parmesan with garlic and some hot salt. Awesome! =D

Thanks to Shandy Im going to try this one out! Thank you for sharing! Michelle

I've been making variations of this since I saw the show where AB did this - awesome alternative to store bought. And the flavor combos are endless. Great post!! =)

Thanks for the recipe, can cut down on the salt this way.Healthy

Yum-O as Rachel would say! I'm all for less salt and fat! Can't wait to try..........

You rock!! Alton to the rescue, as always- I obviously haven't seen that episode. Thanks sooo much! Great post.

First try came out decent but I am going for that sweet and salty kettle corn taste. Put 1/2t sugar in the mix but could not taste any sweet. Will "up" the amount next time and add some "butter buds" to try to get a hint of buttery flavor.

Someone suggested an artificial sweetener. Would that work?

About half of the kernels did not pop. Can they be reused with any success? I'd hate to be thinking I'm throwing away half of my stock. One of the ideas of doing homemade popcorn is the cost savings.

This sounds fabulous, and healthy too!

I am so addicted to popcorn and always do it on the stove, dont have a microwave popper and microwave popcorn is expensive, now all I have to do is get myself some brown paper lunch bags!!!!

I like the idea but am terrified of the staples in the micro!

Trying this right now....lol

Edit: Couldn't bring myself to use staples...used some masking tape instead....

Awesome popcorn!

I just made this and it was very good! I used 2 staples with no problems at all! I used seasoned salt instead of plain salt. I made one bag with a little grated parmesan cheese and another bag with about 6 shakes of hot sauce. I added the hot sauce after it was popped, but I think next time I'll try it before its popped. Both of these versions worked out great!!! I will never use the pre-bagged microwave popcorn ever again! This recipe is so much healthier because I can control the amount of oil and salt! Thanks for this great popcorn idea! UPDATE: 2 days later...I made this again and tried to put the cheese in the bag BEFORE microwaving it. Don't do this because the cheese stuck to the bag and burned! It didn't flavor the popcorn at all! Oh well...live and learn!

This looks super!!

UPDATE: DON'T TRY THIS WITH ZIPLOCS AND ALIGATOR CLIPS, IT WILL NOT WORK! Also a cat IS NOT a microwave!

As a healthy alternative to using Oil or Butter after the popcorn is popped - I enjoy using Frank's Red Hot Sauce to 'wet' the popcorn. Then I usually put a little salt and garlic powder on and enjoy!

I tried this last night and it worked great
I used a full paper grocery bag and cut 1/3 off then I doubled it over and used a few more
staples...Worked great
Having a group of older kids here the larger bag worked great. Just watch the time and be careeful that it doe not burn
Thanks

Another great topper after removing from microwave is brewer's yeast. Tastes wonderful on popcorn.

I think I spotted an typo in step 7: you used the word "only" in "only more than. . ." but the word "no" in "no more than . . ." might be what you are trying to say.

I will definitely try this
