This recipe came off of a 1 pound package of Wal-Mart Chuck Ground Beef. I tried it and it came out wonderful. It makes a soup-like chili.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound of ground chuck
  • 1 small onion, diced (about ½ cup)
  • 1 (15 ounce) can of light red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (28 ounce) can of diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 (8 ounce) cans of tomato sauce
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Optional toppings; sliced green onions, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped avocado or crushed corn chips.

Directions
  1. Cook and stir ground meat an onions in a 5 quart pot over medium heat until beef crumbles and is no longer pink (about 7 minutes).
  2. Drain grease and return meat to the pan.
  3. To the pot add the beans, tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, chili powder, sugar, cocoa and salt.
  4. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to low.
  5. Cover pot and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Serve with desired optional toppings.
  7. Note:
  8. Let simmer longer if you want it to be thicker. I let mine simmer for about an hour. (Also don’t forget to keep stirring)

Looks mouthwatering, and the cocoa powder sounds very interesting in chili! I gotta try this one!

A very nice recipe,I like the cocoa in Cassoulet dishes as will, the addition of avocado, green onions for the toppings sounds very good.

Thank-you

Kind Regards

The cocoa powder makes it almost mole-like, doesn't it, don? Fabo and five-o! Thanks,
Lorraine

Very interesting addition - cocoa. I had to find out what the secret was.

Mmm and this is a great day for chili! Thanks for sharing.

Gotta try this one. I've seen people add chocolate to their chili on food network and every time I mention doing that the family wrinkles their noses. So with the cocoa powder will definitely keep it 'secret'. ;-P

This recipe looks good ! I'm definitely trying the cocoa. Yummy !

Thanks...This is a keeper....

Great post, Donnie. I love the cocoa powder add. A touch of chocolate in chili is a perfect match. I'm saving to try - I'm always looking for tasty chili recipes. High 5 - and thanks! :)

Great recipe. I have put chocolate bar in chilli before but never thought to put cocoa powder. Thanks for the post. It is a keeper.

I put a pinch of cinnamon on my chili and it gives it a good taste but I've never tried the cocoa powder in it but I will now ;)

I am making chili today - todays morning temperature was -6*F, with a 20* windchill. I make my chili in a similar fashion - with the addition of garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, celery seed and cumin. I also use stewed tomatoes - I can be lazy and not chop onion or peppers. In place of water I use boxed beef broth. I just tasted the chili with the new addition of the chili powder and that makes a wonderful flavor! Thanks much for the secret ingredient. (I always wondered why my chili never looked as deep and rich in color as some I have seen - now it does!)

Hey, Donman: I did try this recipie and my fam loves it -- a drag I also found out that I am now allergic to beans, so I just omit them. Thanks! Mary :0)

Neat idea for the cocoa powder - I've had cinnamon in chili before, but not cocoa. Sounds delicious! - Natalie

Wow who would ever think to put chic, in chili quite an adventure I would say high5 post thanks

This is an excellent recipe, and worthy of a five fork rating, Sir.
I see you were rated 13 times, yet my rating shows twelve.
Someone has under-cut you.
I hope this stops.

Cocoa Powder?Hmmmm.... I never heard of that before.

Gets my FIVE, Donman. I honestly cannot see it deserves less than a five, for sure.
